Editor's note: Searching Historical postcards about St. Petersburg Green Benches, I came across the one depicted above. Remarkable, the lady sitting on the end of the bench dressed in black looks like our mother, Amelia Buchan.

This story began February 2001 with the passing of our mother, Amelia Buchan. A questionable probate proceeding instigated by her youngest son, Russell Buchan followed immediately after her death. The story about her death was chronicled in a family website, www.fairnessforfamilies.com This website has been visited by thousands over the past six years and discusses the perils of probate while providing extensive background input about our family.

If you have not visited, www.fairnessforfamilies.com we suggest you do now. It contains much about family history and court documents and exhibits affecting many past and future probate cases.

As it is in most of life’s situations, there is more to this story when the death of our mother in 2001 took an unusual turn in 2005………

Many of us remember radio commentator, Paul Harvey. His byline when returning from a commercial break was,

“AND NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY.”

Growing up in St Petersburg, Florida during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the news media sometimes referred to our city as “God’s Waiting Room”, due to the large amount of retirees living in the area. In the years following World War II, people from all disciplines in life moved or retired to St. Petersburg. My parents, Charles and Amelia Buchan were among them migrating from Brooklyn, New York in 1947.

St. Petersburg was world renowned for its famous green benches. Pastimes for many retirees during those years were spending a few hours each day sitting on the green benches along Central Avenue. Our Mother was working during these years, but most shopping and business activities were conducted along Central Avenue and everyone, our mother included, would welcome the opportunity to sit and visit on the famous green benches.

In the years following our mother’s retirement, the green benches had been removed from most of the city streets. The City Council proclaimed it was an image upgrading. (Bad move) Many of these retired benches found a home at Derby Lane, the local greyhound dog track on Gandy Blvd. Yes, my mother loved to watch the “puppies” run and enjoyed many an evening sitting on the green benches at the dog track. Occasionally, I would meet her there. We sit on a green bench, share a cup of coffee and bet a couple of quinelas using her favorite numbers, 2-5-8.

Years later my mother’s passing was accelerated by the removal of her life support. Some four years later, I discovered that decision was not necessary and pressured by the greed of one family member. My mother was just one person robbed of more days here on earth by the decision of another.

I thought about how many others enjoying the sunshine of sitting on the green benches of St. Petersburg may have had their lives shortened for the convenience or greed of others.

So, now we hear the rest of the story about
